Five Luxury City Breaks That Should Be on Your Travel List

Sometimes all you need is a few days away to feel completely refreshed. A city break offers the perfect mix of culture, style, and indulgence without the need for a long haul flight. Whether you are sipping champagne on a rooftop terrace, exploring historic landmarks, or enjoying the finest local cuisine, these destinations deliver on luxury from the moment you arrive.
Here are five of my favourite city escapes that deserve a place on your travel wish list.
Paris – Rooftops, Romance and Refined Dining
Paris is always a good idea, and my most recent stay at the elegant Victoria Palace Hotel reminded me why. With chic interiors, sumptuous beds, and impeccable service, it was the perfect base for exploring the city.
The must see sights never lose their magic. Admire the Eiffel Tower, explore the Louvre, wander the cobbled streets of Montmartre, and stroll along the banks of the Seine. Evenings are made for dining in style, and the legendary La Coupole with its grand Art Deco interiors and exquisite seafood is a personal favourite.
For a touch of magic, add a visit to Disneyland Paris. I go every year, and it is a wonderful way to blend sophistication with pure joyful fun.
London – Iconic Glamour and Modern Luxury
London is a city that offers something for every mood. My stay at Sea Containers London delivered style and incredible views of the Thames, along with easy access to the cultural buzz of the South Bank.
Dining highlights include Murano for elegant modern Italian dishes and Hutong in The Shard for fiery Northern Chinese cuisine paired with unforgettable views. London’s theatre scene is unmatched, and my current must see is the brilliantly funny and surprising Titanic parody musical, Titanique.
Evenings often end with cocktails at Cellar Door, an intimate underground bar with plenty of personality. From iconic landmarks to hidden corners, London is a city that invites you to explore at your own pace.
Athens – Ancient History Meets Chic City Life
Athens is where timeless history meets vibrant modern life. At Gatsby Athens, a stylish boutique hotel, I enjoyed comfort, creativity, and a perfect central location.
The dining scene is a joy, and Ella Restaurant stood out for its fresh, contemporary take on traditional Greek flavours. The Acropolis and Parthenon are must visits, as are the ancient Agora, the Acropolis Museum, and the charming Plaka district.
Athens is also the ideal pre or post cruise city, especially for Virgin Voyages sailings, giving you time to soak up Greek culture before or after your time at sea.
Palma – Mediterranean Elegance and Harbour Views
Palma de Mallorca offers the best of city sophistication and island charm. My stay at El Llorenç included rooftop lunches with harbour views, afternoons by the pool, and unforgettable evenings in its Michelin starred restaurant.
One of the highlights was the scenic vintage train to Sóller, winding through the mountains and arriving in a beautiful coastal town. Palma’s close proximity to the airport makes it perfect for a short break, but if you have more time, a few nights in a countryside finca will give you a deeper taste of Mallorcan life.
Nashville – Music, Style and Southern Soul
Nashville’s energy is contagious. I have stayed both in a stylish Airbnb in The Gulch and at Dream Nashville, where spacious rooms and excellent cocktails made for a memorable stay.
Dive bars are part of the charm, and Friends in Low Places and Bell Bottoms Up delivered great music and atmosphere. Printer’s Alley became my favourite area for its characterful bars and more relaxed prices. The food scene is a feast of fried chicken, barbecue, and Southern comfort dishes.
The Red Phone Booth, a hidden speakeasy, serves some of the best cocktails in town. Nashville’s walkable layout makes it easy to explore, and if you can, extend your trip to include Memphis or Pigeon Forge for Dollywood and the Smoky Mountains.
